This week, I’ve been writing and drawing an upcoming post forĀ Love Pencils, the blog of the Derwent Pencil Company. It’s a step-by-step illustrated tutorial on drawing eyes. I thought I could cover it with a couple of sketches and a paragraph or two, but one thing led to another, and… well… the result was a worktable covered in eyes!
A peek at ‘How to Draw Eyes’

I love and very much prefer to use Derwent pencils, despite the fact that the company is UK based and I am in the USA – meaning that I pay higher prices for my Derwent pencils than I would have to pay if I purchased pencils made here. The far superior quality of the Derwent pencils makes them worth every last penny!
I first tried the US based, General Pencil Company products and found them to be unsatisfactory for my purposes, the graphite is too hard and doesn’t blend as easily as the Derwent brands do. This is fine for drawings where I don’t need to blend the different grades of pencil, or for lines I wouldn’t need to erase later.
I eagerly await your tutorial on drawing eyes, as that’s – for me – one of the hardest parts of drawing people… which I tend to shy away from.
I can’t wait for the final product to be posted! I visited the Blog site today and was blown away by the excellence of the drawings. I can’t wait for your series of classes on drawing people.
