(Sleepy dog not included.)
I have never been much of a believer in New Year’s resolutions. But then I happened across this:
“The best New Year’s resolutions are those that make us more spiritual people by attending to things of the soul rather than of the physical world. A resolution to set aside a few hours each week or a few moments each day to spend in the garden may make you deeply happy. A resolution to learn more about horticulture may make you wise in the garden and in life. A resolution to share your love of plants with others expands your soul. And a resolution that brings you closer to nature , be it in her wild places or in the cultivated ones, will bear the fruit of consciousness as the circle of the seasons turn s once again.” — Maureen Gilmer, The Gardener’s Way
Do you have a New Year’s gardening resolution? Leave a comment for this post, and share your resolution if you like. You’ll automatically be entered in my January Art Giveaway.
I had so many nice comments and emails on the “Be Yourself” watercolor that I have decided to give away a 10×12 signed, matted print. (Go here for a closer look at the image. ) The winner will be selected by random.org on Saturday, January 17. International comments are welcome, too. Good luck!
Here’s how I spent the first day of 2009:
This is a beautiful watercolor! Would love to be the lucky recipient of the print!
Gorgeous water colour illustration !
A gardening resolution : To keep track of what new plants I have bought in my written log and not rely on my blog to do that with. Also keep track of what plants I move and where .. instead of relying on my very bad memory ? LOL
I do have two gardening plans for 2009!
1. I would really, really, really like to find a spot very nearby where I can grow some vegetables. I have my seeds circled in the Seed Savers catalog and I’m on the hunt for a spot!
2. There is a spot near where I live that I drive by each day. There used to be a house there, but it was knocked down and now slowly the green is taking everything back. The people who sell newspapers on the street put their bags there while they work. I decided the other day I’d like to plant a small flower garden there in the spring.
Lovely giveaway!! and I like how you spent the first day of 2009-I love to lie down with a good book:) I didn’t make resolutions so much as I set personal creative goals for myself, but that in itself is a HUGE thing for me. I had pretty much given up on myself and my old dreams were nothing but distant wishes, I thought I was too old to start now-but over this past year, after I started a blog, I have found those dreams again, found a passion for creating that I never dreamed I had. I don’t know how to explain it really, but I KNOW that I’m changing on the inside too, I feel so much better than I did before I picked up that pencil again for the first time in years and started to draw……I know that along with working towards those creative goals I’ve set for myself, I will continue to change inside. I think that will really help me all around. Thanks for your great post, and have a wonderful day:)
I just made a few artsy resolutions but indeed I have 2 major gardening ideas which I’d like to accomplish in ’09.
1. I absolutely luuuuv to cook, so I’m hoping to plant a herb garden just after spring so that I can use a variety of them in my dishes. The dried herbs in the store are okay but the fresh ones always taste so much better 🙂
2. I’d like to get rid of the ugly thorn bush (with the super deep roots argh!) in our little garden and replace it with a shrub, something with red/orange leaves to break up all of the green.
Hope 2009 brings you many blessings, luv visiting your blog!
My gardening resolution for ’09 is to train my new young Beagle mix, Molly, to NOT dig in my garden. This year she dug up all my yams and most of my herbs.
I love reading your blog 😀

Yes, this year I am not planting so much cilantro. Or cherry tomatoes. I want to do better with my zucchini and peppers.
My resolution is to start early enough with my seeds to have the plants ready to be planted on mother’s day weekend. I hope I win this print!!!!!
It’s beautiful! My gardening resolution is to grow a vegetable garden. I haven’t had one in 4 years and can’t wait for fresh food!
That was a great way to spend New Year’s Day. and wonderful of you to do another giveaway. Are you sure you don’t want to throw in the dog??!! 😉
My only gardening resolution is just to enjoy it more. It seems like I do a lot of work in it; planting, watering, weeding, tending, etc., but rarely just sit and absorb the beauty. So that’s my goal for 2009 ~ absorb the beauty more.
I love the sentiment and love the picture! I can see on the wall in my craft room 🙂 That’s my wish!

In my last comment I meant to say ” I can see it on the wall in my craft room.”
I love the energy of your work!

I just found your blog a few days ago. I have enjoyed it so much and I have lots more to see. Thanks for sharing. I hope to be included in the giveaway for this wonderful print. I love the caption too!
How lovely! Both the sleepy dog and the print! Add me in:)
forgot my resolution-is to enjoy, who I am, where I am, where I’ve been, and where I’m going, just enjoy:)
I adore the print! One of my resolutions for the year is to add three more perennials to my friendship gardens. I just love to swap a few or mine for a few of theirs. Every spring and summer I get to remember and enjoy the companionship of my friends through my flowers.
I did a post on Dec 31 I called it my bucket list. As this changed my life in 2008 to a very happy positive one.

congrats to Joy! How fortunate to win this lovely print.
I too am not a resolution maker though I always do annual goals. In addition to my work goals, this year I’m going a “moving forward” set of monthly challenges. Each will likely have some creative or soul-fulfilling bent. THis month I challenged myself to learn to make origami peace cranes. I’ve already added to that by learning how to create diptychs! I have a few of my challenges for the months in 2009 set out but have purposely left a few months blank so I can plug in something that really strikes me. I’m already looking forward to February. Anyway, not sure why I nattered on and on here. Happy 2009 Val.
