Alabama Beach Mouse:  colored pencil on postcard, by Val Webb

Warm thanks to artist friends who have emailed so many good wishes as our Gulf Coast continues to struggle with the ongoing impact of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Here’s a way for you to get involved with the disaster response, wherever you are, by helping to provide a poignant reminder of the unique beauty of  the natural world:

Postcards from the Gulf: An Art Benefit for the Alabama Coastal Foundation
How it works:  Send an email to studio@valwebb.com with your name and mailing address. I’ll send you a vintage postcard and a stamped, pre-addressed return envelope.  Draw, paint, print or collage on the message side of your postcard and send it back no later than August 25. In creating a canvas from someone’s long-forgotten postcard, we provide a reminder that coastal animals and plants are in danger of becoming only memories, themselves. Each postcard will be matted, backed and placed inside an acrylic sleeve for display at a public reception hosted by the Alabama Coastal Foundation in early September. One week before the reception, the postcards will be made available for purchase online at $50 apiece. Sales will continue in-person on the night of the reception.  All proceeds will go to ACF’s oil recovery work.
If you’d like to participate
  • I have vintage postcards with AND without written messages, so if you have a preference please let me know. They are all the same size, approximately 4×6 inches. Either horizontal or vertical format is fine.
  • In keeping with the event theme, we’re asking for artwork that celebrates the natural beauty (animal, plant, marine or scenic) of the Gulf Coast region. We reserve the right to respectfully decline work that falls outside the event theme.
  • Send a brief bio and/or your contact information along with your completed postcard, and we’ll display it with your artwork.
  • Postcard requests will be limited to one per artist, and you must be 18 or older to participate.
Thanks very much! Please email me if you have questions, and I’ll do my best to answer them.
