I bought some orange-and-yellow tulips at The Fresh Market this afternoon, and used them as our subject for this evening’s botanical drawing class. In the past, I’ve been reluctant to buy tulips by the stem because they seemed to fade so quickly. However, according to The Curious Gardener’s Almanac, there is a simple trick that will make them last longer: stand the stems in boiling water for one minute, then transfer them to a vase filled with very cold water and a dash of salt.
This tulip study, in gouache and colored pencil, was my demo drawing for tonight’s class. It was good to see old friends and welcome new ones as autumn settles in.
